The Museum of Pont-Aven is one of the must-see of your holiday in Brittany. The permanent exhibition will make you discover the artistic life in Pont-Aven from 1860 and on, the history of the establishment of the american colony of artists, together with breton painting. The museum also offers every year several temporary exhibitions about different artistic trends, from synthetism to contemporary art.
The museum has doubled in size in 2016. It is the architecture firm “Atelier de l’île” (the prime contractor who renovated the Rodin museum in Paris in 2015) who imagined this restructuration, which as been made using two existing buildings, a wing of the former museum and the Hotel Julia.
The museum has three levels served by a splendid wooden, glass and metal staircase.
The permanent exhibition is held on the last floor and displays about 4 500 works of art. The chronological and thematic path is accessible to all thanks to several multimedia tools.
The second floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
An outside garden is also accessible on the terrace. It is an artistic garden where heather, gorse and grass grow, a vegetation well represented by the “Ecole de Pont-Aven”. This garden has been inspired by a work from Filiger that you can admire among the museum’s collection.
Don’t forget to drop by the museum shop which offers a great range of souvenirs in relation with the School of Pont-Aven.
Do not miss the former dining room of the Hotel Julia on the 1st floor. It is where the artists from the end of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth century used to live.
It is nowadays a reception hall for concerts, banquets or conferences where some original woodworks and mouldings can still be admired.
